"Zolaf" gathers pieces of himself from Nature, using clay to paint his face and branches to weave wings. Set in South Texas, the reveal of an industrial backdrop rewinds Zolaf’s quest for belonging.
Shot in an abandoned graffiti park by Houston’s Third Ward, two persons fight for their clothing under the spotlight of running cars (off-camera.) Mirrors and wet floor cones on raw concrete.
Watch me have a panic attack submerging myself in a black swimming hole. Setting: solo boondocking in the depths of sam houston national park. Season: winter rain, low temperatures ranging from the 50s. This swimming hole was not a swim hole but a deep black waterhole with no ground. It remains uncertain to this day, what pushed me to dive in, alone, in the middle of an abandoned forest thick with trees ten minutes to dark.
A masked procession through the Menil Collection grounds in Houston; I guide volunteers forward, leaving participants to quietly choose how much they reveal of themselves.
Zolaf prays Namaz in darkening South Texas woods. Denouncing technology and embracing nature, he turns towards an unspoken self.
A public spin on Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors” staged by a dilapidated water tower. Passersby select note cards with prompts like “pretend you see your twin”or “steal a hat,” uncovering the camp of our identities in a city that becomes the comedic foil for it.
