The Dance to Freedom
A house is not a home, and some unlucky children take to foot. The push and pull of the abusive home environment that many face is what inspired me to create this piece. The need to run away is invalidated by reliance on the facade of comfort that the toxic home proposes.
The act of walking on eggshells (needles) in fear of being abused thus continues. And even when you leave the home, the fear stays. There is still a pull within the core.
The needles stabbing at the heel of the boot represent this pain that inhibits you while escaping mentally and physically.
The boot signifies the medium used in the child’s run. Its torn and leather aspect ties it to the ripping leather-couched home. The bitter irony is that the child must use this boot formed in that very setting they wish to get away from to be the base in their running.
And yet, and yet, and yet, a new motion forms while they do. They flow, defying every natural law of order, they become liquid and take to sky. The malformed wires represent the metaphorical wings behind the child’s back and around their bleeding heels.
Levels of gauge differ the ease in wire malformation. But thick and thin, they all become liquid, every single strand changes.
The pins are the wing’s roots that must impale the running heel before it can plunge into flight indirectly, from the side.
